The Relief of Belsen, Channel 4

A reminder of the horrors which awaited my father as a war artist on arriving at the gates of the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp in June 1945, will be shown in a programme on the 15th October on Channel 4 television called The Relief of Belsen.

my father is no longer alive but i am lacking info. do you know if the guards army division took part in the relief-i couldnt glean this from the programme. iremember him saying they got villagers to carry the bodies but i;m worried my memory of what the name was was incorrect. i have always admired your father's work, art and writing.

In reply to the ladie re carry the bodies they were all the SS guards and those who were caught in the surrounding area. The cleaning out of the huts etc was carried out by Hungarian Soldiers who were left behind by the German Wehrmacht who went off to fight the Russian.

I would be very interested to know whether Mervyn Peake wrote anything about Belsen and also exactly what dates he was there. I am writing about the British Medical Students who went there on 29th April.
